Project Description

The purpose of the study is to explore experiences of parents/guardians of children who have experienced bullying/victimization.

The goal of the “Bullying and Parenting” project is to:

  • investigate the way parents learn about their children’s victimization problems,
  • how they perceive and interpret the reasons for the situation
  • what their own school experience was.

An important aspect of the project is to examine how actual prevention and intervention programs, undertaken by parents and school staff, are perceived.

Project Methodology

Researchers will use a grounded theory approach to gather and analyze the collected data. Individual in-depth, semi-structured interviews with approximately 20 parents/guardians will be conducted, recorded, transcribed, and analyzed, using the Maxqda software.

It is crucial to acknowledge that bullying is a set of interdependent, multi-stage psychosocial processes of a domino-effect character. If these processes are not interrupted, for some children they will became a downhill spiral, leading to years of victimization.

Małgorzata Wójcik, Ph.D., Principal Investigator

Expected impact of the project

The overriding aim of the study is to collect data enabling improvements of peer violence prevention programs in schools. Parents are a very important link in preventing violence and undertaking interventions. They can indicate those aspects of the school system that hinder/facilitate cooperation with teachers, and provide (or not) support in the process of searching for effective solutions.

Social potential: The project will facilitate a comprehensive view of the peer violence issue. In practice, it will help to implement an interdisciplinary approach to the problem, such as effective interventions in the school system.
